What are the best bike helmets?
You simply cannot go wrong with a BBB, Lazer or Giro helmet. We’ve been stocking some of these brands for 35 years and know they offer the very best quality and value for money. Between these three power brands, we provide a great selection of head protection for all types of riding and varying budgets.
Bike helmets for kids
Naturally, the cycling market provides a complete kids bike helmet range for the obvious reason that their heads are a lot smaller than ours! We provide some advice further below on how to fit a helmet for little heads. Just be sure not to make the mistake of buying it for your child to grow into. Doing so will mean it offers little protection now until your child’s head does eventually grow and fills it out. A safety-standards approved bicycle helmet (again, see more information further below) is no good to any cyclist unless it fits.
Bike helmets with lights
It’s a great idea to look for bike lights that can affix to the front and/or back of your helmet. Again, every little safety precaution helps. Moreover, helmet lights can better illuminate your path if you’re riding in a low-lit area at night or indeed out on the trails. We are sure you will find a great range of helmet-compatible lights that are easy to affix here at BikeChain.
How to fit a bike helmet
It is actually really easy to get the right fitting helmet for your head, even if you’re buying online and cannot try it on. Here’s how:
Place a measuring tape just above your eyebrows and wrap it right around the width of your skull, forming a circle. This provides your head’s circumference, which corresponds to sizes in our helmet size chart. Follow this chart to make the right purchase for you.
By the way, if you don’t have a measuring tape then just use a piece of string and then run it along a ruler!
Once it arrives, adjust the helmet until it sits comfortably on your head. These days, helmets tend to come with multiple means of adjusting so that you can make the helmet tighter or more relaxed. You want a helmet that fits snug around the head with almost no movement yet does not squeeze so hard that you begin to get a headache.
Make sure the chin strap doesn’t provide too much slack, nor should it be so tight that it’s cutting into any part of you. The strap should fit very snuggly under your chin and can be adjusted accordingly.
With the helmet on and strap done up, try and move it around on your head. Provided you have the right size, then there should be very little movement, despite your encouragement. If there is then you will need to tighten adjustments or indeed consider a slightly smaller helmet.
How to buy a bike helmet online
The answer is surprisingly straightforward. Simply follow the measuring advice we have provided above. When you find the right model on our site just click into the sizing chart to get the best fit for you. And don’t worry, if it is not quite right then you can simply return it to us within 30 days of receipt and we can dispatch an alternative size instead. Too easy!
