Warmers & Base Layers

Do You Need Base Layer Clothing for Cycling?

If you easily feel the cold or you’re riding in the depths of winter, we strongly recommend you include base layer cycling tops or limb warmers as part of your kit. Working to keep the warmth in whilst wicking away moisture, these super-efficient designs help make you more comfortable (and therefore your winter cycling more enjoyable).

However, remember that these are great for insulating the body, but not for protecting against wind and rain. If you’re riding in wet and windy weather, we recommend you also wear a suitable cycling jacket.

You can also opt to wear this kit in the depths of summer, as its moisture-wicking properties will help draw sweat off the body and keep you dry.

How Tight Should Bike Base Layers Be?

The best cycling base layers sit close to the skin, where they can maximise insulation. If you opt for too generous a size, you compromise the kit’s performance (not to mention your comfort). However, you don’t want it so skin-tight that it feels restrictive. Aim for something that feels the way a good sock might on your feet.

Do You Wear Cycling Base Layers in Summer, or Winter Only?

You might be surprised to hear that a good bicycle base layer will be worn in summer as well as winter. This is because its moisture-wicking properties help keep sweat off the body.

What Is the Best Temperature for Wearing a Cycling Thermal Base Layer?

The answer is subjective and depends on how easily you feel the cold or heat. Typically, you will opt for a thermal base layer once the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius. A summer base layer can be worn throughout the warm weather to keep your body as dry as possible in the heat.
