Pedals & Parts

What are the Parts of a Bicycle Pedal?

- Pedal body: this is the part that makes contact with the foot. You can either buy flat or platform pedals that your feet rest on or clip-in pedals which securely attach your shoe cleats to the pedal.
- Bike spindle: this component threads into the end of the crank and connects the pedals to the bottom brackets.
- Bearings: these allow the spindle to turn, enabling the pedal to rotate.

Do All Pedals Fit All Bikes?

Most bike pedals are universally compatible with any bike make or model. Nearly all adult bikes require pedals with a 9/16" thread, so unless listed as a different thread, you'll be able to use any bike pedal with any crank.

How to Choose Bike Pedals?

Finding the right pedal for a bike can be tricky. The most important things to consider when choosing pedals are the type of riding you'll be doing and whether you want clip-in or flat pedals. Your choice of cycling shoes will also play a part; for example, if you want to wear the same shoes on and off your bike, you'll be better off going for flat or MTB bike pedals; but if you want to be fully locked in to your road bike, you'll need shoes with cleats, and pedals to match.
