What are the main components of a bicycle? 

These fall into three categories:

    What is the most important component on a bike? 

    It is a bit like the sum of its total parts; each part plays an essential role, so you can’t really single one out as more or less important. They are all not only important but crucial to the total moving capability and efficiency. How can you pedal a bike without a crankset? How do wheels move without a drivetrain? How do you slow down or stop without brakes? How can you sit comfortably without a saddle? You see our point…! 

    How long do bicycle components last? 

    You’re asking a loaded question, as it depends on so many variables, not least of all the type of riding you do (as in, the discipline but also how aggressively you ride the bike), the weather in which you typically ride, the specific part in question, the brand and more. Rest assured, BikeChain only stocks the best products and brands, so in terms of brand, you know you’re purchasing quality. However, here is a very general rule of thumb to give you some idea:

  • Bike chain - anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000km of riding. Why not buy a chain checker and assess this objectively? If it reaches 0.75%, you know it’s time to change the chain! 
  • Chainrings - this is nice and easy as it’s so visual. If the teeth are wearing down and the chain is slipping, it’s replacement time! 
  • Cassette - apply the rear brake and as you do so, push a pedal. Watch your cassette - do you detect upward movement from the chain? If this happens as you’re pushing on the pedal, that’s a good indication that it’s time for a new one.
  • Derailleurs - don’t worry about this bad boy! With exception to changing the jockey wheels once in the bluest of blue moons, this should be right as rain. 
  • Groupset - provided you’re looking after it properly, then expect a good 3,000km at least.
